SCS Minimum Acceptable JobSite Conditions
According to standards set forth by the National Wood Flooring Association, of which SCS Hardwood Floors has been a member in good standing since the formation of same, we offer our valued clients and contractors the following guidelines for the best performance of your wood flooring:
For Installation of Solid Strip & Plank Flooring:
- Installation and finishing of wood flooring should be one of the last jobs of any construction project.
- The building should be completely enclosed.
- All outside doors and windows must be in place.
- Surface drainage should direct water away from the building.
- All texturing and painting primer coats should be completed.
- In warm months, the building must be well ventilated each day.
- Be sure the flooring will not be exposed to extremes of humidity or moisture. Interior environmental conditions must be near the average for geographical area, and must be at occupied levels.
- Unfinished strip or plank flooring should be allowed to acclimate 1 to 3 weeks prior to beginning sanding and finishing operations.
- Air-conditioning must be operational and in service within 30 days of installation, and for a minimum of 10 days prior to beginning sanding.
- Local building codes may differ. Local building codes prevail. Always follow local building codes.
For Sanding & Finishing Strip and Plank Wood Flooring:
- Installation and finishing of wood flooring should be one of the last jobs of any construction project.
- Air-conditioning must be operational and in service within 30 days of installation, and for a minimum of 10 days prior to beginning sanding.
- Sanders will begin by “rough-cutting” the entire floor, then either spot-filling or flood-filling to fill any gaps or cracks in the floor.
- Once “fine-sanding” begins, all foot traffic should be eliminated from the jobsite. Foot traffic from other tradespeople or homeowners could introduce contaminants, leaving footprints in the finished product or possibly prevent adhesion of urethane finishes.
- As a rule, SCS does not “hold” final coats of urethane “until construction is completed.” See your sales representative for alternative options.
- Upon application of the final coat of urethane, SCS recommends foot-traffic be kept off the floor for 24 hours. If necessary, flooring may be covered with a construction-type paper after 24 hours.
- SCS recommends a 30 day “curing” period before area rugs are placed on the finished floor.
- Follow recommended cleaning procedures ONLY. Do not use Murphy’s Oil Soap, Pledge, Endust, Swiffers, Water or any products containing paraffins.
- Local building codes may differ. Local building codes prevail. Always follow local building codes.
